Shiprock is a prominent rock formation located in northwestern New Mexico. It is a sacred site for the Navajo Nation and is known for its striking spire that rises dramatically from the surrounding landscape. The formation is a remnant of an ancient volcanic neck.

The Aztec Ruins (a white-man misnomer) are actually the remains of an ancient Puebloan community. It is one of many archaeological sites in the four corners region which also includes Mesa Verde and the Valley of the Ancients.

We stopped to view the stars over Capulin Volcano National Monument. While not the darkest sky I’ve ever seen, the Milky Way was clearly visible. Using long exposure the view is stunning.

Outside of Eureka, Utah, the Tintic Standard Reduction Mill is a fascinating set of ruins. The mill sits abandoned and is a very dangerous place to explore, so be sure to stay back if you pass by. This picture was taken from a safe distance behind the fences warning of the dangers of the site. The mill was used to process silver ore from the mines in the area. The mill only operated for five years, but left the soil and water poisoned with led and arsenic.

The grounds are scattered with exquisite sculptures nestled among the decrepit remains of the old brick factory and the raw wilderness of the Montana landscape.
